Jul. 24, 2025
The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration founded the Franciscan Spirituality Center four decades ago as a place for spiritual development, offering opportunities for prayer experiences, retreats, spiritual direction and open discussion. We’ve grown and evolved over the years to meet changing needs, but our core mission has remained the same: We are dedicated to ALL who seek God, meaning and wholeness and we create spaces for community, connection and compassionate listening. Come and learn more about what the FSC offers to individuals, the community, and beyond! Jean has been a part of the FSC team since 2017. Her first role was as the program and retreat coordinator. She earned her Master of Divinity from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and her Bachelor of Arts in social work from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She has extensive training in crisis response, community-based organizing and effective communication, as well as significant fundraising and grant-writing experience. Jean serves on the boards of YWCA and Scouts BSA and is also on the Advisory Committee for Great Rivers 2-1-1. She lives in Onalaska with her husband, Matt; their children, Logan and Lydia; and Labrador Retriever, Scout. |

![]() Out of Africa
Jul. 31, 2025
Join Karen and Duane on their adventure to the Serengeti, the School of St. Jude, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Their careers in academia led them to journeys throughout Europe, China, India, and Russia, all of them dwarfed by their travel to Tanzania, Africa in the Spring of 2022. In the Serengeti they witnessed lions, elephants, giraffes and zebras by the hundreds, colorful birds, monkeys of all varieties, and thousands of wildebeests crossing the countryside during annual migration. At the School of St. Jude they were entertained by incredibly talented children, learned how to weave and drum, dined on beans and rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and fell in love with bright, young, enthusiastic children eager to learn and challenged to lead their people out of poverty. At Kilimanjaro they slept with native people, ate goat and rice prepared on three stone firepits, and witnessed how to make the most of life in the village with smiles, laughter, and joyous conversation. Karen and Duane are now enthusiastic supporters of St. Jude and enjoy bringing other Rotarians to Africa to share these same life changing experiences. Karen and Duane were born in the Midwest. Their careers led them to appointments in Michigan, Washington, D.C., Arizona, and South Dakota. Living in the Black Hills, Duane joined Rotary in Rapid City. After retiring from academia, Duane and Karen moved to Sparta, Wisconsin, almost exactly between grandchildren in Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. Karen and Duane joined the Thursday Luncheon Rotary Club shortly after moving to the LaCrosse area in 2023. “We’ve had an exciting life and want to share these experiences with others through contributions to Rotary.” Karen is retired from two careers. She was geologist/geophysist, employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. She was also a secondary school teacher (7th grade!) in Houghton, Flagstaff and Rapid City. Duane is retired from a 45 year career as a tenured full professor in mechanical engineering, physics and chemistry with research in high pressure combustion. He served as Dean of Engineering at three institutions.

![]() Writing as a Way to Heal
Oct. 02, 2025
Pain is a natural part of life, whether it’s the loss of a job, a marriage, a pet, a friendship, your innocence, your health, or a loved one. John DeDakis witnessed a car-train collision that killed three people, lost his sister to suicide, and endured the death of his youngest son because of an accidental heroin overdose. Even though death is a part of life, it doesn’t have to be crippling or debilitating. In this presentation, John will share strategies—including journaling and storytelling—to help you move forward, through and beyond the pain and into a future that can once again be filled with hope—and even joy.
Grief and loss are subtexts in all six of John’s award-winning mystery/suspense/thriller novels, two of which are set in southern Wisconsin. Some scenes in his novel Bluff are set on Grandad’s. John grew up in La Crosse but now lives in Baltimore. His father, attorney N. George DeDakis, was the president of the downtown Rotary Club in 1961. John is a former White House correspondent and former editor on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.” John is currently a writing coach, manuscript editor, podcaster, and rank amateur jazz drummer. ![]() The Least Dangerous Branch? Understanding the Supreme Court in the 21st Century
Oct. 30, 2025
When the Supreme Court was created by our Constitution in 1787, it was intended to be the least dangerous of the three branches of government. In more recent times, the Court has been perceived as more powerful, and often more political, taking on a larger role in our public discourse. In honor of the new 2025-26 Court term, this session will explore the vision of the Court through the eyes of the Founders, and perceptions of its current role in our system of government.
Sam Scinta is a Lecturer in the Political Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he is also the Director of the Legal Studies Minor, and a Lecturer in the History Department at Viterbo University. He is the creator and Director of the Common Good Initiative, a program dedicated to civic education and strengthening bonds between citizens and government, within Viterbo’s Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership. As part of this program, Sam created Rebuilding American Civics, a program designed to provide civics education and creating a space for civil discourse for community members, along with Civics and Cinema, a partnership with the Rivoli Theater. For over 25 years, he served as an editor and the publisher of Fulcrum Publishing, a leading independent book publisher. He was also the founder and former Director of IM Education, Inc., a nonprofit focusing on critical thinking and civil discourse within regional high schools. He received his JD from the University of Denver, and has served on several boards in the Western Wisconsin region.

Dec. 04, 2025
When Rotary was established by Paul Harris and three others, each person came from a different walk of life. This diversity is a cornerstone of Rotary. The intent is to have a cross-section of business and professional experiences in your community.
For decades Rotary International listed a range of professional “classifications” and restricted how many representatives of each could be in a club. This ensures that each club reflects the community in which it serves. It also reminds us to not have one profession as a dominant voice in our club. Over time, these restrictions have pretty much given way, but your classification continues to be of great interest to your fellow club members. That’s why your Rotary badge carries your name and your classification. Classification talks help us learn about the life experiences and professional backgrounds of new members.
