PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:  01 November 2018

This week’s message is to get you to think about your personal legacy.  I couldn’t help but think about this topic throughout last week while traveling in Europe.  It was common to see buildings there that were 800 years old and the history of the communities was frequently twice as old.  Being a part of Rotary International guarantees an extraordinary legacy.  There are many ways to make the world a better place to live both within and outside of Rotary.

My great grandfather came to the USA from Germany.  Then, my grandfather went to Germany during World War II where he was shot.  Last year, my son Jared was carrying out his Rotary Youth Exchange in Germany in a small town very near the spot where my Grandfather was shot.  It’s amazing how things can change within a few generations.  My hope for you is that you work towards leaving a legacy.  Change within a few generations can be dramatic.

Each week, I include a few suggestions on videos to watch.  Chip Colwell recorded the following TED Talk on this topic of legacies.  The talk is entitled “Why museums are returning cultural treasures.”  The video is approximately 14 minutes long.  Ted Talk LINK

During the weekly meetings, one of our members has discussed a different aspect of Rotary.  We haven’t discussed the topic of action groups, but Rotary has many.  One of these action groups is called RAGAS (Rotarian Action Group against Slavery).  The following link is just under 3 minutes long and addresses this topic.... RAGAS LINK

Finally, invite someone to our Club’s meeting this week.  We have money set aside to cover the cost of your guests’ meals.

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

Having a family outing...invite Lucia....it will be a rewarding experience for you and your family.   Reminder if you are one-on-one with our youth exchange student you will need to have a background check done.  Online Application for a background check.

You can connect with her at an upcoming meeting or give her a call!

COMMITTEES
Tami Woods will be
highlighting our
Committees for 2018-19

You will notice that at the end of your personal newsletter that you receive by email, it will list the committees and fellowships you are on.   (We have also included the Fellowships under the Committee module on ClubRunner.)  This is a great reminder to what committees you have volunteered for.

We have put together two lists...one by committees and one by members.

Please review and let Lyn know by email, if you would like to be on a committee and/or if you would like to change the committee you are on to another.  This will help us get our committees updated and hopefully everyone will be on a committee that they are passionate about serving on.

Our web site has a page dedicated to our committee structure...link to page.  On this page you will find a list of our committees and description and also a committee form to fill out if you would like to update the committees you would like to serve on.

We are also looking for chairs or co-chairs for the Fellowships

LAST WEEK AT ROTARY

Presentation on Henrietta LacksJamie Bakkum Gamez MD gave an amazing presentation on Henrietta Lacks.
(Jamie is the sister of Rotarian Andy Bakkum.)

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Now an HBO® Film starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Bring your non-perishable food items to Rotary
November 1st

Info below from their FaceBook page.

Created in 2015, iFeed is a proclaimed holiday in La Crosse. iFeed is a one day event that brings the greater La Crosse community together to help alleviate hunger in the world and our own communities. The fourth annual event is organized by seven area high school Interact Clubs and their Rotarian advisors. Interact is the high school equivalent of Rotary that focuses on teaching servant leadership.

Part 1:
Involves packing 100,000 + dried meals in assembly line fashion. The past two years we have shipped these meals to Nicaragua.  This year they will be shipped to help victims from Hurricane Florence.

Part 2: Includes the collecting of non-perishable food items in the weeks preceding iFeed. The collections are all brought to Logan High School November 3rd for the area's largest food-drive. The items will be counted, sorted, and transported to the Hunger Task Force to be distributed to area food banks.  They hope to collect 50,000 items this year.    They are asking that you collect items at the corporate level and bring them to Logan High School that morning.

FRUIT BASKET FUNDRAISER

FRUIT BASKET FUNDRAISER....Our Fruit Basket Fundraiser is to generate financial resources for our club activities and service projects.  The fundraiser also provides an opportunity for all club members to participate in an annual activity through the assembly, distribution, purchase and sale of fruit baskets during the holiday season.

Every Downtown Rotarian is obligated to buy or sell a minimum of five (5) baskets @ $20 a piece. You may allocate your baskets to a local pantry of your choice.

Does your business give employee gifts?  Rotary Fruit Baskets are your answer!  Each wicker basket contains 8 apples, 5 oranges, 3 pears  and a bag of peanuts.  The fruit is delicious and the sturdy basket makes an attractive keepsake.  We have special rates for large orders: 200+ ($13), 100-199 ($15), 49-99 ($16), 1-48 ($20).

Order forms will be available at our upcoming meetings...our dates will be December 8th to assemble and deliver and December 10th to deliver.  Save those dates!

theEXCHANGE
theExchange - People helping People - Many families in our community need a helping hand.  theExchange partners with local social service organizations to provide free gently used furniture, kitchen and household goods to community members in need.

Bill Hoel had two guests last week, Denise Shedivy (and her husband Carl).  She volunteers with theExchange, which is a local non-profit helping the homeless.  They’re a part of the La Crosse Collaborative to End Homelessness.  What they do is, when a homeless person finally gets some shelter, the person’s social worker brings them to theExchange, and they get what Denise describes as “an apartment in a bag” – stuff needed to set up housekeeping, including some furniture.  Problem is, theExchange is being removed from the donated space it has occupied for awhile.  If anyone has a lead on possible space that might be available to this agency – they need about 3,000 sq. ft. , please reach Bill Hoel, who can connect you with the agency.

If you have something you would like to donate....here is their brochure with more information.

Learn More About Growing Hearts Across the World

Message from the Fundraising Committee: Lee Rasch, Kerstin Boudreau, Kenna Christians, Sue Durtsche, Mary Ann Gschwind, Chuck Hanson, Kathryn Sexauer, Mike Swenson, Jodi Widuch, Todd Restel, Katie Berkedal and Catherine Kolkmeier.

As you know, we are celebrating 100 years of Rotary service to our region with the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign. The campaign will culminate with the completion of the Cameroon Garden in Riverside Park in the summer of 2019. The Garden will honor the rich cultural traditions of Cameroon and provide a wonderful gathering place overlooking the area where the the “Three Rivers” meet. Most importantly, it will serve as a model for community and international service for the upcoming generations of Rotarians.

To date, we have received excellent support from Rotarians. But we have not yet heard from all of you. The next phase of the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign will be to the Seven Rivers Region community. It is very important to be able to state to the community at large that Rotarians are fully committed to Growing Hearts Across the World. Indeed, there is no better message than to state...every Rotarian in our Club contributed. We have asked members to consider a $100 contribution pledge for up to two years. However, your contribution at any level will count.   Please complete a pledge card and include with your payment.

Growing Hearts Across the World - Sculptures/Entrances - Naming Opportunities Link

Please turn in your pledge cards and contributions to Earlamae Dahlby or send your contribution to Rotary at P.O. Box 1914, La Crosse, WI 54602-1914.

One hundred years of service by Rotary has had a profound impact on the lives of many in our region and throughout the world. Come join us in celebrating this service...and help set the stage for generations of Rotarians in the years to come. If you would like more information, please contact Lee Rasch, Chuck Hanson or Eva Marie Restel.
