Video - Gapminder

It was the last 200 years that changed the world. In 1809 all countries of the world had a life expectancy under 40 years and an income per person less than 3000 dollar per year. Since then the world has changed but it was not until after the second world war that most countries started to improve.

For the first time, Gapminder can now visualize change in life expectancy and income per person over the last two centuries. In this Gapminder video, Hans Rosling shows you how all the countries of the world have developed since 1809 – 200 years ago.

The interactive animations and corresponding documentation are freely available at www.gapminder.org/world.

AL LOUIS'S 2020 MUSKY CHALLENGE
“Al Louis’s 2020 Musky Challenge”

Thank you to all who submitted a request to be a part of the Musky Challenge Fundraiser.   The following will each receive $500 of the funds raised:  Mobile Meals - Guardian Angel Fund; Gateway Area Council, BSA - Fall Cub Camp; La Crosse Public Education Foundation - Random Acts of Kindness; and Family and Children's Center - Chrome Book Project.

The main recipient of the fund will go to New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers - Stewards of Children Training.

Starting July 25 through August 25,  Al will be fishing up at Lake Vermilion with the hopes of catching many Muskies.  Al is contributing $100 per Musky he catches during that time frame and challenging our members to match any $ amount towards each Musky.  If you want to challenge Al to $10 per Musky and he catches 7, your generous contribution of $70 would go towards the fund.  Last year we raised over $4,000 which went to The Parenting Place for the 2019 Diaper Drive.  Al’s minimum donation will be $500 and he will also be promoting this fundraiser at his honorary clubs in Arizona and Minnesota.  Anyone donating $50 or more will receive a bronze Centennial coin.

You will be hearing more about the fundraiser and how you can sign-up to challenge Al.

WHEELS OF HOPE FUNDRAISER INFO

Thank you to  Rotarians Jodi Widuch and Mary Beth Hensel for presenting our "Wheels of Hope" project.   This is an international project that our club in cooperation with other Rotary Clubs has set a goal to raise money to fund a bus and a van to safely transport girls to their schools in Afghanistan.    LINK to PowerPoint Presentation.

Only 12% of women in Afghanistan are considered literate. The Zabuli Education Center is one of the few successful schools for girls that is working to change that sad statistic. The Wheels of Hope Project is an important support to expanding educational opportunities for girls and creating safety. This work is inspired by  Razia Jan, last year’s District Conference keynote speaker and founder of the school.

DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP GRANTS
Membership Grants - Rotary District 6250

Rotary District 6250 allocates $1,000 grants to five district clubs.  The first 5 clubs to recruit four or more new members between July 1 and April 30 were eligible for a $1000 grant for these new members to use for a project of their own.  These members must remain for 4 months for the club to be eligible.   Our club was the recipient of this grant in 2018-19 and 2019-20.  The new members were invited to a Zoom meeting to discuss the dispersement of the $2,000.

The guideline for the Membership Grant Program is for the new members to use the funds for a project(s) of their choosing.

Recipients of the funds were:

New Horizon's Dart Program

New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers, Inc. - Rita Carranz, Dart Victim Service Coordinator accepted a $500 check from Rotary President Tami Woods.

This was made possible through the Rotary District 6250 Membership Grant Program. New members of the Rotary Club of La Crosse were given $2,000 to be used for projects of their choosing.

Their Victims Service Coordinator with the Domestic Abuse Reduction Team (DART) provides intense case work and follow up to individuals and families who have experienced repeated domestic violence incidents. The DART program pairs an advocate with an officer of the La Crosse City Police Department.

Gateway Council Boy Scouts

Gateway Area Council, Boy Scouts of America - Rotarian Joe Carlson presents a check for $500 to Kevin Corkin, Development & Community Engagement Director. These funds will go towards kids that need a subsidy for camp this summer.  They are planning on moving forward with limited camps this summer in line with state and federal guidelines.

New Horizon's Food Pantry

New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers, Inc. - Rotarian Patty Nuttleman presents a $500 check to Ann Kappauf, Executive Director of New Horizon's for their food pantry.  Their annual Postal Service Food Drive that usually contributed 6,000 pounds of food for their food pantry was cancelled due to the pandemic.

YMCA

La Crosse Area Family YMCA - President Tami Woods presented Bill Soper, CEO of the La Crosse Area YMCA with a $500 check.  They suspended all membership dues through August, these funds will be used to pay for youth activities this summer.

THANK YOU
We received the following thank you from Honorary Rotarian Mike Hartigan:  I specifically want to thank you and the Rotary Board for the “Honorary Rotarian” designation. I have enjoyed all that Rotary has to offer, especially the international focus and over the years the singing. My family’s long history with Rotary began with my grandfather who was a charter member of the Fairbury, Nebraska Rotary Club. My father and brother were also Rotarians. The Four Way Test says it all. Thank you for the fellowship, friendship, and all you do for Rotary.

Once our club can start meeting in person, we will recognize our new honorary members and Paul Harris Fellows at our meetings.  It will be a time to celebrate!!

GET WELL

GET WImageELL WISHES

Rotarian Mark Jolivette had shoulder surgery on Tuesday.  He is recovering at home with his special nurse Sharon.  He said "it ended up that every rotator tendon was torn, more and worse than expected, and his biceps were shredded.  A  hole was drilled through his upper arm for its re-attachment.  Throw in some bone spur removal and he got the baker's dozen special."   We wish him a speedy recovery.  His addres is 3492 Woodbridge Court, La Crosse, WI  54601.
