The Rotary Club of La Crosse is sponsoring Inbound Youth Exchange Student Jaakko for the 2023-2024 school year!
Jaakko will tell us about his family and friends and share some of the customs, interests and hobbies that take place in his home country of Finland.
Jaakko is a student at Central High School in La Crosse and is currently living with his first host family, the Restels.
In addition to his trip to La Crosse this year, he's traveled to Mexico, Vietnam and Iceland.
Jim Salmo coordinates our Youth Exchange student's schedule with his host families, as well as the background check process required for Rotarians to spend time alone with Jaako. Please contact Jim if you'd like to invite Jaakko along to one or more events this year! Jim Salmo
Examples of outings that Jaako might enjoy:
If you are a musician, consider inviting Jaakko to a concert or jam session as he loves music and plays the electric guitar.
If you or your family enjoy hockey or ice skating in the winter, you may wish to invite him along as he enjoys and plays ice hockey.

TJ Brooks was named the dean of UW-La Crosse’s College of Business Administration after filling the role on an interim basis for nearly two years.
Professor of Economics Mary Hamman, who chaired the search committee, says the group selected Brooks in part because he is “data driven and inquisitive, with a desire to lead the CBA as a partner with the campus and the community.”
TJ presented on several components that make a difference in our economy today.

The Humanitarian Committee is sponsoring an item drive for incarcerated individuals in the La Crosse County Jail. This is a follow up on the speakers at the September 21 meeting. Please participate by

Thank you for your support of this important project.
The Youth Exchange Cultural Celebration is a wonderful opportunity to learn about exchange students in our area and give them a warm welcome! For the meal, the students have hand-picked recipes they think you will love, to celebrate their culture.
Please consider attending. Proceeds of this event help to support our exchange students on their end-of-year trip to the East and West coasts.
The event will be held at The Main, 422 Main Street in La Crosse. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

Around the observance of Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, The Rotary Foundation received The Mahatma Award for its remarkable contributions and social impact in India, across disease prevention & treatment, maternal and child health,education, economic development, environment, and water sanitation and hygiene. The award was conferred to RF at the India International Centre in New Delhi on Saturday, September 30, for its exemplary
work in India. The Mahatma Award honors the timeless principles that Mahatma Gandhi lived by, to make the world a better place for all. Following these principles, Rotary members have demonstrated their commitment to making the world a better place through their dedication and service towards humanity. All the service projects are designed and implemented by members of community-based Rotary Clubs to ensure sustainability and maximize the results of
their work.
Rotary in India, with its nationwide reach, implements projects through
structured programs with a network of nearly 2 lakhs Rotary members in 4600+ Rotary clubs and 2900+ Rotaract clubs. Rotary clubs and districts in India collaborate with partners to undertake innovative, community-based, sustainable projects through Rotary’s Global Grant program.
Rotary International Director (2023-25) Anirudha Roy Chowdhury who received the award on behalf RF(I) said, “Through the commitment to service above self, Rotary members have exemplified what it means to be global citizens, bridging gaps and uniting people from different cultures and backgrounds for the greater good. Their unwavering dedication to sustainable projects reflects a shared responsibility to address the world’s most pressing challenges. We feel very proud to have won such a prestigious award which will pave the way for future collaborations and more sustainable impact.”
