This week, we celebrate Veteran’s Day as well as the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Let me lead this week’s message by thanking those of you in our club who have served our country. To celebrate this week and o honor our veterans, I am recommending that you watch a TED talk titled “Why I choose a gun” by the Netherlands' chief of defense - Peter van Uhm. This 17 minute video is an interesting view from a military commander on the use of guns as an instrument of peace.
For those of you with an adventurous spirit, the 10th of November was Rotary Day at the United Nations. This 6 hour and 30 minute link is a recorded video of the live event held in Nairobi. For full disclosure, I did not watch the entire event, so please let me know if you viewed some particularly memorable moments. Note that RI President Barry Rassin gives a short talk at approximately the 31st minute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KMzwKwxKHI
Please invite a guest to our club’s meeting this week. Remember, we have money set aside to cover the cost of your guests’ meals.
Our members support these foundations by their individual donations. Last year you donated $22,000 to Rotary International Foundation, $10,500 to PolioPlus and $23,000 to Rotary Works. You will hear about how your donations to these foundations make a difference in our community and world.
Our all time giving to Rotary International is $714,500.

Here is her PowerPoint presentation.
FRUIT BASKET FUNDRAISER....Our Fruit Basket Fundraiser is to generate financial resources for our club activities and service projects. The fundraiser also provides an opportunity for all club members to participate in an annual activity through the assembly, distribution, purchase and sale of fruit baskets during the holiday season.
Every Downtown Rotarian is obligated to buy or sell a minimum of five (5) baskets @ $20 a piece. You may allocate your baskets to a local pantry of your choice.
Raffle: This year we will be raffling off two gift baskets for those members that sell 10+ baskets. For every 10 baskets you sell your name will be put in the drawing. They will be on display at our upcoming meetings. We will draw the names on December 13th. (Thanks to Jamie Capuzzi for donating the Beer Basket & Wine Basket - both have $40 worth of gift cards to Outback Restaurant.)
Does your business give employee gifts? Rotary Fruit Baskets are your answer! Each wicker basket contains 8 apples, 5 oranges, 3 pears and a bag of peanuts. YOUTH EXCHANGE HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR ONE NIGHT... Our Rotary Club will be sponsoring a Youth Exchange Weekend on December 7-8.. Beginning Friday, December 7, Inbound Youth Exchange Students from around the state will be arriving for a fun-filled weekend.
We are in need for places for these students to stay on Friday night, December 7th. Your accommodations do not need to be 5-star.
If you can host, you: -- would pick them up Friday at 5:30p.m. at the Onalaska Public Library, 741 Oak Ave. S., Onalaska;-- would provide Friday night dinner and Saturday breakfast; -- would decide how to spend time with them Friday night and Saturday morning. This could be just chatting with them, doing something special, helping with Saturday's fruit basket project, etc.;-- would drop them off at noon at South Lanes Pizza, 4107 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. For the rest of Saturday, they will spend it bowling, helping with the Ugly Sweater 5k event, working at Rotary Lights and sleeping overnight at the Boys and Girls Club. Their rides home will be picking them up Sunday morning.
If you can assist with this by hosting one or more students, please contact Jack Haase at jack.c.haase@gmail.com or call at 507-313-1128.
Please contactDean if you have children, grandchildren, friends etc that would be willing to entertain us on Thursday, December 20th. They would need to be there between 12 and 1 that day. Contact Dean for more information.
