PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:  23 August 2018

The Rotarian Magazine’s September 2018 edition arrived at my home this weekend.  In addition to me hoping that you are reading this magazine on a monthly basis and checking in to the RI website on occasion, I was particularly pleased that my messaging over the past two months so closely reflects RI President Barry Rassin’s Message to all Rotarians in his September address.  I am not big on recreating the wheel and since RI President Rassin said it so eloquently, I am going to refer you to the magazine.  (His message is not yet posted to the RI website or I would have included the link.)

Since I am saving time by using his message, let me take this moment to encourage you to have a login to the RI website.  The link is as follows:  https://my.rotary.org/en.  If you need help setting this up, call me and I will make time to help you.  I wouldn’t make this offer if I didn’t feel it was important.

In sticking with the theme of the Rotarian Magazine, here is one more link.    https://www.rotary.org/en/what-it-takes-be-rotary-international-president.  Don’t be afraid of the title.  This article is from the August 2018 Rotarian Magazine.  It lays out many of the leadership positions in Rotary including Club President, District Governor, RI Director, Rotary Foundation trustee, RI president and Regional Leaders such as Regional Rotary Foundation coordinators, Rotary coordinators, Rotary public image coordinators, Endowment/major gifts advisers.  These are positions that our Club should be looking to fill.

For this week’s Rotary video, I am including a link to Rotary International’s 1 minute video titled “This Close”  https://youtu.be/eTogeTGQgP8.  Our very own Jud Beck at Fox 25/48 has aired this commercial 100’s of times this year as a Public Service Announcement.  Thank you Jud!

This week’s fun video is a TED talk about a very funny interaction between a comedian and an email spammer.  It is almost 10 minutes long and is guaranteed to entertain you.

LAST WEEK AT ROTARY
Last week at Rotary we welcomed Jared Restel, one of our youth exchange rebounds.  We heard about his amazing and life changing experiences from his year as a youth exchange student in Germany. He learned a new language, discovered another culture, and truly became a global citizen.  Listening to his stories from the year confirmed to our membership that our investment in Rotary Youth Exchange students is an investment in our youth and future leaders.  We are building peace with one young person at a time.   Thank you to Jared for representing our club and country so well.   View Jared's PowerPoint Presentation.

Todd and Eva Marie Restel, proud parents of Jared,
honored him with a Paul Harris Fellow.
Jared received a certificate, lapel pin and the
Paul Harris Medallion.

Congratulations to Jared!

We also welcomed Mitchell Paquette, Global Scholar that our club is sponsoring this year.   He will study for a LLA in International Human Rights Law at University of Essex, Colchester, England for the academic year 2018-19.  Mitchell's PowerPoint presentation.

Here is the link where videos are located that Mitchell mentioned in his presentation.  Mitchell will be creating a blog or web site for us to follow his journey in England....watch for the link in an upcoming newsletter and on our home page of our web site.

Thank you to our Youth Committee for their commitment to the program on behalf our club.  There are many behind-the scene activities/work, meetings, paperwork, interviews, follow-ups, etc that go on to make this program a success.    If you know of a student who would like to live a year in another country, there will be an informational meeting on September 19, 2018 at 6:30 pm at the Children's Museum, 207 5th Avenue South, La Crosse.  See information below.

Jean Gitz Bassett — April 23, 1924 – Aug. 6, 2018

One advantage of growing old is to be able to create my own final word. By writing my own obituary, I hope to share my legacy in a meaningful way, contributing my own personal thoughts to my final testament. I write the following in a joyful and uplifting way, expressing appreciation for the love spread around me in my lifetime.

GROWING HEARTS ACROSS THE WORLD

Centennial Project Fundraiser - Growing Hearts Across the World.

Message from the Fundraising Committee: Lee Rasch, Kerstin Boudreau, Kenna Christians, Sue Durtsche, Mary Ann Gschwind, Chuck Hanson, Kathryn Sexauer, Mike Swenson, Jodi Widuch, Todd Restel, Katie Berkedal and Catherine Kolkmeier.

As you know, we are celebrating 100 years of Rotary service to our region with the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign. The campaign will culminate with the completion of the Cameroon Garden in Riverside Park in the summer of 2019. The Garden will honor the rich cultural traditions of Cameroon and provide a wonderful gathering place overlooking the area where the the “Three Rivers” meet. Most importantly, it will serve as a model for community and international service for the upcoming generations of Rotarians.

To date, we have received excellent support from Rotarians. But we have not yet heard from all of you. The next phase of the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign will be to the Seven Rivers Region community. It is very important to be able to state to the community at large that Rotarians are fully committed to Growing Hearts Across the World. Indeed, there is no better message than to state...every Rotarian in our Club contributed. We have asked members to consider a $100 contribution pledge for up to two years. However, your contribution at any level will count.   Please complete a pledge card and include with your payment.

Please turn in your pledge cards and contributions to Earlamae Dahlby or send your contribution to Lyn Sheffer at P.O. Box 1914, La Crosse, WI 54602-1914.

One hundred years of service by Rotary has had a profound impact on the lives of many in our region and throughout the world. Come join us in celebrating this service...and help set the stage for generations of Rotarians in the years to come.

We have dedicated a page on our web site for our Centennial year to keep members updated on our project.  Click here to view.

If you would like more information, please contact Lee Rasch.

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

Rotary Friendship Exchange...The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world. In addition to experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships, an exchange provides a strong foundation for carrying out other international activities and service projects. The primary goal of a Friendship Exchange is to build greater international understanding and goodwill among Rotarians and their families. In addition, exchange participants can learn how their vocations are practiced in other parts of the world, observe new customs and cultures, and promote an appreciation of cultural diversity worldwide.
