On 24 October, join Rotary for their fourth annual World Polio Day event, co-hosted with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They will be streaming live from CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, to bring together more than 50,000 viewers around the world. They will be joined by celebrities and experts to share OUR progress on the road to polio eradication.
World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99%.
Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.
WHAT CAN YOU DO
Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. Your gift to the PolioPlus Fund is eligible for Paul Harris Society recognition. Our club will match your donation with "foundation points." You give $500 we will match your donation with 500 points...you will then receive a Paul Harris Fellow. Any donation $10, $25, $50, etc will be matched with foundation points. Write your checks out to Rotary Foundation - note Polio Plus and give to Lyn. We will accept donations for the match until Thursday, December 15th.

Thank you from Dan Danou's family...... I simply want the Rotarians to know how much Dan appreciated the many cards Rotarians sent over the course of his illness. He felt connected and cared about. Those cards were important to me, too. They were a comfort letting me know we were not alone. I also want to express our family’s appreciation to the many Rotarians who came Sunday to Celebrate Dan’s Life with us. You honored his memory with your presence and interest in learning more about him. A special thank you to Patt Boge who spoke during the celebration of Dan’s commitment to Rotary. And you, Lyn, thank you for all you did to keep the information flowing during Dan’s illness, your communication with me, and all the cards you personally sent. Nancy Danou
Growing club membership, finding ways to enhance the image of the work of our clubs, and deepening member involvement in The Rotary Foundation are three critical themes facing our clubs. To think more about where your club is and where your club wants to be regarding these themes and to learn new ideas to strengthen your club, plan on attending the “One Rotary Summit.”

Thanks to his vision and staunch advocacy, and the extraordinary generosity of Rotary members worldwide, that fund has become one of the world’s leading humanitarian foundations.
