Rotary Club of La Crosse
Youth Committee
Community Service Award

Mission:
The Youth Committee of the Rotary Club of La Crosse seeks to recognize and encourage academic excellence, good citizenship and career development in youth. To help fulfill this mission, the Committee provides an annual Community Service Award of $1,000.

Award Requirements:
  • Eligibility is limited to students previously recognized by the Rotary Club of La Crosse as Students of the Month from Aquinas High School, Central High School or Logan High School.
  • Students must further demonstrate good citizenship through active participation in a Rotary Club of La Crosse community service project, or through active membership in the Rotary Interact Club at their high school.
  • The Committee will select one award winner of $1,000 based on the following criteria:
    • The quantity, quality, and consistency of community service provided by the student, including active participation in at least one community service project of the Rotary Club of La Crosse, or their school’s Rotary Interact Club.
    • Greatest weight will be given to the Rotary involvement, but additional consideration will be given to those who have provided consistent community service, particularly service demonstrating kindness and reaching out to others who are less fortunate, especially fellow students.

Nomination Process:
  • Applications are accepted in January each year from eligible high school seniors who were recognized as Students of the Month as juniors.
  • Applications must be type written using a Word document.   Download Youth Award Application.
  • Applicants must write an essay of no more than one page, answering: (1) Why are you deserving of the Rotary Community Service Award? (2) Why is winning the award important to you?
  • Applicants must include one letter of reference from either: a Rotary Club of La Crosse member who played a leadership role in the community service project in which the student participated; or from their Rotary Interact Club advisor.
    • The letter of reference must describe: the project or community service action for which the student is being nominated; the type of impact the student had on the outcome or success of the project; and how that impact was measured or evaluated.
  • Return applications, postmarked no later than January 31, addressed to: Rotary Club of La Crosse, Youth Committee Community Service Award, PO Box 1914, La Crosse, WI 54602-1914

Award Notification:
  • Award winners – and other applicants -- will be notified by March 31 each year and invited to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of La Crosse for an award presentation.
  • While the award is not a “scholarship,” it is the Youth Committee’s intention that award recipients will apply the money toward college-related costs.
  • Before the award can be made, the winner is required to submit a federal W-9 (taxpayer identification and certification) form. Prizes and awards must generally be reported as taxable income to the recipient. Award winners are responsible for any taxes due. The Rotary Club of La Crosse will issue a federal 1099 form to the recipient at the conclusion of the year.
