Understanding and Addressing Microagressions in Everyday Life

Dr. Cooper Stoll is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. Her research explores social inequalities in schooling, gender-blind sexism, and critical weight studies. She is the author of two books, "Race and Gender in the Classroom," winner of the 2015 Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Book Award from the Race, Gender, and Class Section of the American Sociological Association, and "Should Schools Be Colorblind?" (spoiler alert: no) Dr. Cooper Stoll has also published several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Because of her expertise, she is often asked to conduct professional development with PreK-12 educators on ways to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools. 

This presentation will discuss the nature and extent of microaggressions, the physical and mental consequences of microaggressions, and strategies for moving forward.
