Last Week: Gemma Sisia, School of St. Jude
Gemma has traveled the world spreading the word about The School of St Jude; from the International Rotary Convention to the TEDx stage, she has inspired people of all ages and from all walks of life with her story. St Jude’s was built on her belief that everyone has the right to an education. Since 2002, Gemma has seen the school grow to offer free, quality education to 1,800 students across three campuses, expand to include a successful
university program and watched over 400 alumni graduate from university and begin entering the workforce.
During this year’s tour, Gemma will be joined by an incredible St Jude’s alumni: Dr. Suleiman. Dr. Suleiman joined St Jude’s in Form 1, spending 6 years at the school and was among the first Beyond St Jude’s (BSJ) scholars. After studying medicine, he is now working as a doctor at Tanzania’s largest and most renowned hospital. Both of them will take your guests on journey through the growth of the school, sharing the big wins, challenges and undeniable results of the schools model through personal stories.
Send well wishes and prayers for healing to Rog Christians today (October 28th) as he is having shoulder surgery. He will be home later today to recover over the next several weeks.
Keep Gerry Arendt in your thoughts as he recovers from a break in his back. He had surgery on October 14th and is recovering well at home.
Steve O'Malley is recovering from a fall at the Pickleball for Polio Event last Thursday. Steve tripped, fell, and cracked his head while trying Pickleball for the first time. He was treated quickly and recovering nicely.
After a short stay in the hospital last weekend with a blood infection (sepsis), Mark Jolivette is getting stronger every day. He thanks you for your prayers and concern.
Our condolences to the family of Judy Kuipers who passed away on October 15th. Judy was a member of our club in the 90's while she served as the first female UWL Chancellor. Judy was on The Brain Game Committee in its early stages and also served on our board at one time. THIS ARTICLE is a fun read. HERE is another article about Judy we wanted to share.

The Gates Foundation extended its gratitude to Rotary International for its
partnership in polio eradication via a video message from Microsoft Corp. co-founder
Bill Gates shown last Tuesday afternoon to members of the Rotary Club of Saipan at the Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan. “The Gates Foundation is thrilled to continue our 2- to-1 giving match, with Rotary up to $50 million. The tripling impact of every dollar
you raise, we’re so grateful that Rotary has taken full advantage of that match
during this critical period, and we hope to continue that streak in the years ahead,”
said Gates. According to the billionaire philanthropist, the role of Rotary goes far beyond fundraising, of course, Rotarians have been leading the charge on this issue. “Since the beginning through advocacy awareness campaigns... we should all be incredibly proud of how far we’ve come when polio is eradicated. And I, do mean when, not if it will be one of the biggest advances in public health in human history.” Gates added that Rotary’s efforts are crucial in achieving this goal. “The world would have never gotten to this point without Rotarians, and we won’t be able to get over the finish line without all your efforts. I’m looking forward to celebrating with you the day we cross it together. So, thank you once again for all that you do.” Gates mentioned that Rotary International has played a pivotal role in the fight to eradicate polio, leading the creation of the Global Polio initiative in 1988 while polio paralyzed 350,000 children every year.
