Great Rivers United Way is a well-known brand for fundraising. Most people are aware of that piece of United Way. There is more to the story, however, and this will be a very quick lightening round of what else is going on at this 77-year-old nonprofit. GRUW isn't asking for money! There is more than fundraising going on and Great Rivers United Way wants to fill you in.

Classification Talk
When Rotary was established by Paul Harris and three others, each person came from a different walk of life. This diversity is a cornerstone of Rotary. The intent is to have a cross-section of business and professional experiences in your community.
For decades Rotary International listed a range of professional “classifications” and restricted how many representatives of each could be in a club. This ensures that each club reflects the community in which it serves. It also reminds us to not have one profession as a dominant voice in our club. Over time, these restrictions have pretty much given way, but your classification continues to be of great interest to your fellow club members. That’s why your Rotary badge carries your name and your classification.
Classification talks help us learn about the life experiences and professional backgrounds of new members.

FOUNDATION MINUTE FOR June 1, 2026 Welcome to Week ONE of RI’s Month of Fellowships.
The Haiti National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Initiative (HANWASH) has been selected by the Rotary International Foundation as the recipient of its annual Programs of Scale Grant. The announcement was made on May 18, after an earlier pre-announcement to hundreds of Rotarians at the District 7020 Conference in Kingston, Jamaica. Launched in 2017 by Barry Rassin, a Bahamian past Rotary International president, HANWASH has so far operated in five of Haiti’s 147 communes, aiming to deliver sustainable access to potable water nationwide. “This is an amazing moment for us,” Rassin said. “It has put District 7020 in a place where few districts around the world could even think to be.” The grant follows a competitive process that began in August 2025 with a concept note, according to Marlene Gay, a HANWASH board member and past president of the Rotary Club of Pétion-Ville. Of more than 60 applicants, HANWASH was shortlisted to three before submitting a full proposal and undergoing vetting that included consultations with Haitian officials, mayors and water authorities…. Over five years, the aim is to establish sustainable water systems — piped networks and wells in urban areas, and solar-powered pumps in rural ones. The initiative adopts a systems approach, acting as a convener that brings together stakeholders before handing over management to local authorities. Rotary International, the world’s largest service organization, has a track record in such efforts. Its End Polio Now campaign has eliminated poliomyelitis in most countries; only Pakistan and Afghanistan remain endemic.
