This Week: DEI Committee Presents Jazzma Holland
Jazzma Holland, M.S. Ed., (she, her, hers pronouns) currently serves as the Assistant Director of Student Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at Edgewood College. Previously, Jazzma served as the interim Assistant Director for UW-La Crosse’s Office of Multicultural Student Services. She also served as the Director of the Upward Bound (TRIO) program at UW-La Crosse (UWL) from 2021 through fall 2022 and Upward Bound as a whole since 2019. Jazzma also serves as a member of the university’s Division of Diversity and Inclusion leadership team and participates in several campus committees.

Jazzma played an instrumental role in developing and promoting Social Justice Week 2022 at UWL. Social Justice Week is comprised of a week-long series of programs, speakers, and events focused on social justice. While Jazzma is a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at UWL, she also is a strong advocate for these principles in the greater La Crosse region.

Jazzma currently serves as co-founder and president of the nonprofit Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K.) and was a past member of the City of La Crosse Criminal Justice Management Council. In addition, Jazzma is a member of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Celebration Committee.

Jazzma serves as a mentor to young people in and around the La Crosse community and played a key leadership role in “Pretty Brown Girls,” a community organization dedicated to the uplift and support of black and brown girls. Jazzma is also the host of the podcast, AllThatJazz, and creator of the Annual Wisconsin Black Women Empowerment Event.

Jazzma holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational and Professional Communication as well as a Master of Science in Education in Student Affairs Administration. Both degrees are from UW-La Crosse.
Last Week:  Richard Strauss, Classification Talk

What great insight to who our members are through Classification Talks.  Last week we heard from Richard Strauss and gained knowledge about his upbringing, his family, school/college experiences, overseas travel, and his work...all experiences leading him to the position he is in today.

Member comments, "Richard is so sweet and so funny!" "What a great speaker Richard is!" "Richard knocked it out of the park with his classification talk."

Classification talks are not JUST for new member, any member is encouraged to tell their story. Reach out to Mark Jolivette to schedule your classification talk!

Hospitalizations and Condolences

We received a report that Thomas Brock is recovering "slowly but surely"  from his esophageal cancer surgery. And there is no sign of cancer.

Our thoughts are with Mark and Sharon Jolivette, as we learned Mark's mother passed away late last week. Mark and Sharon are ending their winter stay in AZ early to travel to IA to be with family at this this time.

Kwik Trip Gift Cards for Sale EVERY Week

Did you know we sell Kwik Trip cards before every weekly meeting?  Did you know that for every card sold, our club receives a percentage...but YOU receive the full value of the card!  It's a WIN WIN!  We always have a supply on hand. Check them out at the registration table!

Temporary Member Hardships

There have been instances over the last year where a few members have reach out expressing a temporary hardship and contemplate leaving the club. Rob and Niki are putting together a list of members we might call on that would consider helping to cover another member's dues for a quarter should this be the case. If this is something you might consider, please reach out to Niki Pohnl and let her know.

The Environmental Committee, with the support of our Rotary Board, will again be assisting the community group, River Cleanup La crosse 2023.  Volunteers are needed to work on the boat landing in Trempealeau on May 12 and in our local area on May 13th.  Please reach out to Bud Hammes for further details if you are available.
Donate to: EXTRA EFFORTS AWARD
The Youth Committee will be sponsoring the annual “Rotary Extra Effort” awards that will be held during our May 11th meeting. This program celebrates the accomplishments of local high school students who have overcome significant obstacles in their young lives, and is always a club favorite. As has been the case in previous years, the Club would like to present a $250 award to each recipient of the award, and we are asking club members to consider donating money to make this happen.

Any amount appreciated! If interested in donating:
